Guide · WhatsApp and AI
WhatsApp Business app or the WhatsApp API: which one your business needs.
More and more customers want to buy over WhatsApp. The question isn't whether to use it, but with which tool: the free app you already have or the official API that lets you automate and serve customers at scale.
Definitions
The WhatsApp Business app is the free business app you install on your phone. The WhatsApp Business API is Meta's official connection that lets your number run from a system: several people answering, an AI assistant and your tools connected.
01 The difference
The app and the API, side by side.
Personal WhatsApp is left out: if you sell, at the very least use the WhatsApp Business app, which is free.
| Criterion | WhatsApp Business app | WhatsApp Business API |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Free. | Meta charges for template messages, plus the fee of whoever runs it. |
| Where it runs | On your phone and a few linked devices. | From a platform or system connected to your number. |
| Who answers | You or a small team sharing the same phone. | Several people at once, each with their own inbox. |
| Automation | Greeting, away message and quick replies. | An AI assistant that answers, qualifies and books. |
| Integrations | None outside Meta. | Your website, calendar, CRM or order system. |
| Messaging first | Broadcast lists, with limits. | Meta-approved templates, to people who opted in. |
| Ideal for | Businesses that get few messages and reply by hand. | Businesses with volume, a team or after-hours service. |
WhatsApp's features and rates are set by Meta and can change. Always check the current terms.
02 When to choose each
When the app is enough, and when it falls short.
The app isn't a bad version of the API: it's a different tool. The problem starts when your business outgrows it.
The app is enough if…
- You get a few messages a day and answer them on time.
- You, or a single person, answer from the same phone.
- Your customers write during business hours.
- You don't need to move the data into another tool.
You need the API if…
- People write at night and on weekends, and those customers get lost.
- Several people answer and step on each other’s conversations.
- You pay for ads that lead to WhatsApp and can't keep up.
- You want to book, send reminders or record every customer without doing it by hand.
03 The API rules
What to know before connecting the API.
The API isn’t just “WhatsApp with more features.” It has its own Meta rules that are worth knowing before you make the move.
- Verified business
Meta requires a business account with your company's details. Having your own website and your details in order makes verification easier.
- Your number
Depending on the case, Meta lets you keep using the app with the same number or asks you to migrate it to the API. We check first, so you don’t lose conversations.
- The 24-hour window
When a customer writes to you, you can reply freely for the next 24 hours. Outside that window, you can only message them with an approved template.
- Approved templates
Messages the business starts, like reminders or promotions, are written as templates that Meta reviews and approves before they go out.
- Quality and consent
Meta measures the quality of your messages. Messaging people who didn't ask for it lowers your rating and can end in limits or a blocked number.
04 With an AI assistant
What changes when an assistant handles your WhatsApp.
The API is the connection. The AI assistant is who answers, with your business's information, at any hour.
-
Answers instantly
Hours, ballpark prices, delivery areas and availability, at three in the afternoon or eleven at night, in your brand’s tone.
-
Qualifies and books
It asks the questions you'd ask, books the appointment or takes the order, and sends you a summary with the customer's details, ready to close.
-
Hands off to a person
Anything it shouldn't handle alone, like a complaint or a negotiation, goes to your team with the full conversation so nobody repeats questions.
05 How to get started
From the app to the API, in three steps.
You don't have to change your number or learn a new tool on day one.
- 01
We review your case
How many messages you get, who answers, what people ask and whether it makes sense to connect the API or stay with the app a while longer.
- 02
We connect and configure
Business verification, your number, the templates and the AI assistant with your business's information, tested before going live.
- 03
We measure and adjust
Every month we review the conversations and results to improve the answers and avoid spending on messages that don't sell.
- Also works on your website
- Every lead reaches your WhatsApp and your email
- Scope in writing

Ask on WhatsAppIs the WhatsApp Business API free?
Not entirely. Meta charges for the template messages a business sends to start or resume a conversation, based on the message category and country, according to its current rates. On top of that comes the fee of whoever connects and runs the API, such as the platform or the AI assistant.
Can I use my current WhatsApp number?
In many cases, yes. Depending on the case, Meta lets you keep using the app with the same number or asks you to migrate it to the API. Before connecting anything we review it with you, so you don't lose your conversations or your number.
Can my number get blocked?
Yes, if it's misused. Meta measures the quality of your messages and can limit or block a number that messages people who didn't ask for it or who report it as spam. Only message people who agreed to hear from you, and give them an easy way to opt out.
Do I need a website to use the API?
It's not required, but it helps: Meta asks you to verify your business and having your own website makes that easier. Plus, a website with a WhatsApp button brings you conversations from people who find you on Google, not just those who already have your number. See how we build business websites and online stores.
How much does an AI assistant on WhatsApp cost?
It depends on the volume of conversations and the integrations, like your calendar or CRM. At Blinq it comes with a one-time setup plus a monthly fee with a set number of conversations, separate from Meta's per-message cost, quoted in writing after the free assessment.
